Course Descriptions

When You Wonder If That Person Will Snap… Recognizing and Understanding Threats and Potential Attacks

As first-line service providers, clerks and their staff frequently interact with a wide range of individuals, some of whom may pose a threat to public safety. Identifying and interacting with these types of individuals requires specific training and knowledge. Increasing awareness and practical knowledge of potential threats and threatening situations will better prepare officials and employees to identify, respond, and assist in the de-escalation of a threat and/or the possible prevention of a future attack.

When It’s Everybody’s City Hall… Understanding and Assessing the Label of Mental Illness

During this session you will learn (1) history, symptoms and common behavior associated with a variety of mental illness diagnoses; (2) treatment and medications commonly used for specific diagnostic categories; (3) specific techniques appropriate during interaction with agitated or delusional individuals; (4) practical solutions and choices for dealing with agitated or disorganized individuals.

When You Know That You’re Not the Problem… Working With and For Impossible People

Sometimes the most challenging individuals we deal with are elected officials, co-workers and fellow employees who exhibit behavior that create personal stress and difficult situations within the workplace. This session will explore the motivation of these individuals and develop personal responses to increase your comfort and develop barriers for self protection.
